What is Altered Haemodynamics....?

It is the study of abnormal blood flow. This is related to the injury of blood vessels which may be linked to movement and posture. However, its application to young active patients has only recently been considered.

Why do you need to know about it ?

AH considers vascular syndromes as a cause of pain. These syndromes can and do mimic common neuromusculoskeletal presentations.

How does it apply to your day to day work?

Differential diagnosis of these conditions is key complete clinical reasoning. This is an essential concept for practitioners involved in manual therapy, orthopaedics and sports medicine.

Can you afford to ignore it?

No. Delayed or misdiagnosis due to a poor index of suspicion has been documented to lead to serious long term sequalae in young patients.

Who else knows about it?

It is a recognised medical concept. There is a growing body of research coming out of continental Europe and the USA written mainly by physicians - who have been critical of Manual Therapists for inability to recognise these conditions quickly.

NDS offer a two-day educational course for practitioners (Physiotherapists, Sports Medicine practitioners, GPs, Podiatrists, Orthopaedic practitioners, Manual Therapists etc). To find out more about these courses, click on the links below:
